Experience one of Crete’s most rewarding mountain adventures with a guided trek to the summit of Mount Psiloritis, also known as Mount Ida. Rising to 2,456 meters, Psiloritis is the highest mountain on the island and one of the most iconic landscapes in Greek mythology and Cretan nature.
Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Heraklion to the Lakkos tou Mygerou plateau, located high in the mountains at 1,580 meters altitude. From here, follow the famous “Strata tou Psiloriti” trail through the rugged alpine terrain of the UNESCO-recognized Psiloritis Natural Park.
Along the route, admire dramatic mountain scenery, untouched wilderness, and panoramic viewpoints stretching across Crete. According to ancient mythology, nearby lies the legendary Idaean Cave, believed to be the birthplace of Zeus.
At the summit, discover the small stone chapel of Timios Stavros, traditionally built without mortar using ancient dry-stone techniques. From the top, enjoy extraordinary 360-degree views over the island, reaching both the Aegean and Libyan Seas on clear days.
